i found fruit trucks, junkyards, trains, graffiti, funky metal sculptures, weeds, antiques, little stores both thriving and abandoned, and two restaurants -- both mexican -- right next door to each other. the enchilada platter at la tropicana ('the trop' to locals) did away with the rest of my angst, and i spent the trek back over the river thinking about the potential uses for this empty storefront (i think it's the old BoMo building): an art gallery? cafe? jewelry store? bookstore? if you could open any kind of shop, how would you use it?

OMG, Stephanie and I have had this very conversation about that storefront! Maybe it's a sign that we should all open something there together! ;)
AND, we were recently in that "antique store" in your second picture (actually both "antique" and "store" should be in their own quotations, because each word is a bit of a stretch in this case). Yikes! (I should also say, however, that the woman was perfectly lovely and we bought Alice some maracas that she just couldn't be without!)
Thanks for always doing such a fabulous job of showcasing our quirky, wonderful little city! :)
If I opened a store it would be a combo art gallery/coffee house/meeting place. :D I love your pictures!!!
I'd open up a books and music store. No question. 2 of my favorite things.
Sounds like you had a good walk :)
My oh my... such wonderful eye candy!
I would open a coffee-juice bar/artsy-fartsy/vintage-junkyard shop & offer art workshop/classes. :]
unbreakably pissy mood
I love that! So honest and real. Also made me giggle. ;P
Great shots! Good walk. Dreamy store front.
Didn't take a walk this week, wish I had, equally pissy mood. Now feel like I had a great walk, thanks to you! (Work is being a PITA, and I haven't posted one darn thing on 21 Secrets). Keep showing us picks of Lawrence!
Ooh, I haven't eaten at that Mexican restaurant in years. I used to wander around there while our oldest had a flute lesson at someone's house in that neighborhood, while her younger siblings would nap in the car. Fun!
That storefront needs some lovin. Let's bring it! I have an espresso machine I'd be willing to lug over... :)
I'm not glad that you were in a pissy mood, but it's nice to know I haven't been alone! Rough week. But I love your photos. Wish I had some freedom to get away and explore when I'm feeling that way. Some combo of art gallery/ bookstore/ coffee shop would be a fun storefront enterprise.
you and your cool town. i have no idea what i'd put in that vacant shop....maybe an antiques boutique.
love locust street. :)
i take pictures there usually when i do y lawrence shoots!
love that mexican restaurant.....my 3 yr old niece hugged the waitress once...just because she was a nice lady. it was so cute.
oh yes, a gallery! Nice big window for natural light... {:-D
Love the pics and all the mysteries you came across, love the building i would make it into a shop or bakery!:O)
the entire blogosphere's been in a "pissy mood" this week :)
I would open a coffee shop that sold the most delicious sandwiches (I make very good sandwiches) on the most delicious bread. I love bread and bakeries and I could tell you about all the lovely bakeries anywhere we've travelled before I could tell you a thing about the touristy things :)
PS Singapore has the best bakeries ever!
The Place would first have to have a cool name. Then I would add: old books (for the smell), coffee & tea, relaxing music in the background, old beat up tables with cool old wooden kitchen chairs for journaling, creating in general. Sounds like you have a team of folks already around you that could and would help in the creation of a magical, creative environment for the artsy folk to enjoy. Do It!
Mmmmmmm, Mexican!
Great photos! The second to last made me laugh. The eyes truly are windows, but to what soul....
I want to see that storefront COVERED in your doodles!
can you have a used book/coffee/antiques/jewelry/art supply store all in one? Looks like you just might be able to pull in off in your wacky town.
Your pissy mood = great eye candy for us. Thanks for taking such an interesting walk! Glad you're feeling better too. ;)

Great collection of pics! I am fascinated by the metal sculptures.
Coffee shop - used bookstore - you can buy coffee, buy books (possibly slightly coffee-stained), or read the books while you drink your coffee and store it behind the counter in an A-Z bookshelf with under your name (no charge, just buy a coffee). Yes, I have been looking at too many home-library pages while drinking tea . . .
