my brush has gotten a bit too staid and comfortable on traditional paper and it is yearning to stray. but canvas and i do not agree. there's some kind of hangup there. everything i do on it looks stupid to me. i've had more luck with other flat surfaces - bags, cork, pegboard - and i'm going to try a few of these alternatives, too. any other ideas?

fantastic list......i'm canvas-phobic, too.....there's something about that canvasy surface that says "don't even waste your time trying to paint on me". i've learned to follow the canvas' advice.....

I recently painted on bristol paper for the first time and LOVED it. You should gesso the back of the paper first to keep it from warping. I also used some industrial type paper towels to mop up paint on the bristol paper for an interesting effect and then used the paper towel in another piece as collage material. (nothing goes to waste in my studio!)

h Aimee, I'm of no help because I have the opposite issue! I love painting on texture (I actually build tons of texture up on canvas before painting on it) and find it very hard to make paint look good on flat surfaces. Even very rough watercolour paper feels too 'flat' to me.

Yep I know what you mean about canvas. I made some boards out of paper mache to paint on. Worked better although I still cannot progress past pen on paper!

I had great luck with a piece of wood used as a platform in the building of houses. I got it at Habitat for Humanity, and it cost fifty cents. So not only did I get a great surface to work on, but I supported, in my own tiny way, charity.
I also love to work on bags, and did a bunch for Altered Couture a few years ago, working not only on canvas, but pre-quilted white cotton, which was a blast!
I recently started working on YES! canvas. It's much thinner and tightly woven than traditional canvas, as is good for watercolor, too! For some reason, it works the best for me - that little painting I sent you was done on it. Give it a feel and see what you think!

I know exactly what you mean. I've been using canvas for years because I have worked in acrylics. But now that I want to try mixed-media, I find that something flat or something that can be flattened (like watercolor paper) is the only way to go. Canvas can be too bendy.
