my brush has gotten a bit too staid and comfortable on traditional paper and it is yearning to stray. but canvas and i do not agree. there's some kind of hangup there. everything i do on it looks stupid to me. i've had more luck with other flat surfaces - bags, cork, pegboard - and i'm going to try a few of these alternatives, too. any other ideas?
if you've posted a handwritten list today, please leave your link in the comments so we can find you! i'll be back soon with a little doodleditty about public embarrassments...

fantastic list......i'm canvas-phobic, too.....there's something about that canvasy surface that says "don't even waste your time trying to paint on me". i've learned to follow the canvas' advice.....
loved reading your interview over at kind over matter......and, by the way, you ALWAYS bring a colossal burst of sunshine into our lives!!! xox, :))
I recently painted on bristol paper for the first time and LOVED it. You should gesso the back of the paper first to keep it from warping. I also used some industrial type paper towels to mop up paint on the bristol paper for an interesting effect and then used the paper towel in another piece as collage material. (nothing goes to waste in my studio!)
I posted a list today and need your help interpreting camera mumbo jumbo. Thanks!

ah, material joys!

You have got some GREAT ideas there ! Can't wait to see the outcome !
My list is up now ... can't wait for U2 see it ! tee hee
h Aimee, I'm of no help because I have the opposite issue! I love painting on texture (I actually build tons of texture up on canvas before painting on it) and find it very hard to make paint look good on flat surfaces. Even very rough watercolour paper feels too 'flat' to me.
I like your list and enjoyed reading others' ideas in the comments!
My list for today is about the things I love about snow... we are having immense, record-breaking, shut-down-the-city snow here. I also posted photos... or snowtos as I'm calling them :)
Things I Love About Snow
First-time Tuesday lister here, but I've been enjoying all of yours for weeks now! Here's my silly contribution:

Aimee, those are great ideas! I'm really in need of some painting inspiration lately too, so THANK YOU!
Here's me today:

My list for day is a faux mixtape of sorts - songs with a lot of words. http://daisyyellow.squarespace.com/vividlife/list-faux-mixtape-songs-with-lots-of-words.html.
I feel the same way about canvas. Everything ends up looking like forced crapola, but every now and then I still feel compelled to give it another whirl.
Here's my list for this week- (I'm jonesing for an IKEA shopping trip)

Ahhhhhh! I'm a canvas phobe as well. I love wood. Wood works...but canvas blech ....makes me wobbly.
I love your ideas! Less pressure.
Xo
Mari
My list is up :0)
Hellllppp! I'm in NEED of chocolate and I listed all the different kinds I need...anyone want to run some over??
I've missed ya! As the tear winds down, I'm winding up to join the land o' blog fun...great to see all you have been doing :)
Yep I know what you mean about canvas. I made some boards out of paper mache to paint on. Worked better although I still cannot progress past pen on paper!
paintbrush dancing
w/you
is so much fun!
(& i also know
that there's a
paintbrush that loved
dancing in your hair
in mn!). xox
endless possibilities. How 'bout on the floor. I forget where I saw a painted floor recently--it was a mural and was all worn from feet, but that gave it a cool antique-y feeling

Oops, forgot to add my link yesterday! I was too distracted looking at everyone else's links! :)
Doilies! Great for printing on at least so probably fun to paint onto!
Also furniture!
I had great luck with a piece of wood used as a platform in the building of houses. I got it at Habitat for Humanity, and it cost fifty cents. So not only did I get a great surface to work on, but I supported, in my own tiny way, charity.
I also love to work on bags, and did a bunch for Altered Couture a few years ago, working not only on canvas, but pre-quilted white cotton, which was a blast!
I recently started working on YES! canvas. It's much thinner and tightly woven than traditional canvas, as is good for watercolor, too! For some reason, it works the best for me - that little painting I sent you was done on it. Give it a feel and see what you think!
Howdy aimee,
Thanks for the substrate ideas - this is perfect.
yep - I am late this week - but haven't forgotten.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been using canvas for years because I have worked in acrylics. But now that I want to try mixed-media, I find that something flat or something that can be flattened (like watercolor paper) is the only way to go. Canvas can be too bendy.
