art every day month #7: scrappy bags

For once (and probably the only time) this month I'm posting before noon! This is because my 4 year old blasted me out of bed at 5:45. That was bad enough, but not as bad as when I realized it was in fact 4:45. And wouldn't you know it, she went back to bed and slept until 8:30, leaving me holding the early morning bag. Which gave me the idea of making bags. So I did not grouse for long. Made a cup of coffee, got out the new paper cutter and my tape gun, and fashioned a bunch of gift bags and tags from the remnants of my rolls of handmade paper. They were a steal - I found them in the gift wrap section of World Market for $2.99 each. The paper is just thick enough to give the bag a fun pillowy shape, but not too thick to fold and seal. Perfect for paper crafts. (This is also the paper I used for the happy little feet stepstool.)

As usual, I made more than I can use for myself, so if you'd like to drop a comment here, I'll draw two names on Wednesday for a mini handmade bag stuffed with tags! The minis measure about 3.5" by 5". The tags are 2.25" square folded, just slightly smaller than the groovy doodle cards, and are blank inside. I won't seal the bag, so you can reuse it as a gift bag yourself. You could also use it for a journal pocket, a bulletin board pocket, or a library book pocket.

I love this idea! I always keep my scraps and most of the time I don't have any clue what to do with them. What a great way to wrap up a small gift!

Ooooo! Love those bags and tags! The face paper is so cute!
Got a new kidspeak word for ya too. The step stool and bar stool in our kitchen to reach the counter when our 'hooeycorn'artgrl was little was and still is known as a 'highup'.

Thank GOODNESS you have this blog so years from now, when this daughter needs to be guilted into something - here's your evidence of how she's made you suffer! ;-) I think you desever and incredible self indulgent evening!

count me in!

also, I'd like to know about your paper cutter -do you like it?

I bought (a different) one a while back, but it was a piece a junk.

also, what kind of tape gun are you referring to, and what do you do with it?

I am a user of basic tools, scissors, ruler, etc, but always wonder if i'm missing out on something!

I would like to be considered for a mini-handmade bag stuffed with tags!! Or a handyman that's tough with stuff!! Or a candyman stuck together with fluff ... or a minty-fresh mini-bag untouched by pricetags ... and so on!! I'm just being silly ... : ]

Wow. A brand spankin' new paper cutter! I have paper cutter envy! Mine is so old, it's all metal and weighs about a hundred pounds, and has a broken spring, so you have to prop up the blade with your head while you position the paper.
Beeeutiful little bags!

I was just thinking you're all ready for gift giving this holiday season with these cute tags and bags!
And it's so fun to use new tools like paper cutters and scissors isn't it?
Hope you're enjoying the sunshine today Aimee.

I feel your mommy pain. I had one who went to sleep at 11 pm, the other one up at 5am. I don't think I remember much else....
Like the bags, and a good idea.
I was up at 5, but I can't blame my kids, just my buzzy brain!

Here is a haiku for you

Today is bag day
Under eyes, on the table
some pretty, some not.

what a gal! making "lemonade out of lemons" - very novel way to use your extra time. I sat on my "everspreading beeee-hind" on the couch & read the newspaper, sipped weak tea (too lazy to wait for the kettle water to get to the proper temperature)... but - what a glorious day of R & R....
I'd love to have some Artsyville bags...

I love it too. And the waking up early, what a drag! But you made the best of it. that is very impressive. We were in a motel last night and the very cool looking, but hard to understand alarm clock/cd player was set to go off at, I think it was, 3:15. I didn't know how to turn it off so hit snooze . . . and then hit it again before finally getting the bright idea to unplug the darn thing. Oh well, I can laugh about it now :)

Never thought to check World Market for wrapping paper! How did you manage such amazing creativity with that early wake up call, you must make one mean cup of java!

Jenn said...

First... You posted before NOON? If I posted before DINNER I would be happy :)

I love the little bags!! One of my dirty little secrets is that I always think crafts sound like a great idea...art like this is usually the culprit to make me think I should do it... beautiful and creative... but then when I start a project, I remember that I don't like the creative process so much....and it goes incomplete. Most of the time.

So I'll look at your beautiful works and admire :)

lovely! I'm very much supporting the -make good use of what is there to be used- idea. The bags are very nice indeed!

I actually like that early time of day for making things, maybe it is the peace and quiet in the house before dawn and shortly after before the hustle and bustle of the day takes hold of me and carries me away.
