art every day #16/list it tuesday 11/16: also known as

also-known-as

i can't resist a good nickname or slogan. call it the marketer in me, or maybe just a lover of kitsch. i especially have a thing for city nicknames, those monikers that reveal far more than the map ever will. there are the crime towns: murderapolis (minneapolis), killwaukee (milwaukee), bodymore (baltimore), killa city (kansas city). the slogans: "living with a mystery" (villisca, iowa), "we've got all the civilization you need" (riverton, wyoming), "the city that saved itself" (fort wayne, indiana). the superlatives: spinach capital of the world, gymnastics capital of the world, the watermelon capital of the world, and the fruitcake capital of the world (all on which there are multiple claims). for more U.S city sobriquets, go here. for more art every day, go here.

thanks for all the customer comment cards in/about the mailbox - it was, in her words, a prize winner!

this time difference between kansas and new jersey is killing me. i wait for 'list it' to go live for eons!! hahaha.

i know, i'm sorry... i am a late poster! doing the art every day, i'm doing everything i can to keep up with the posting, and i usually don't decide until the day of the post which kind of list i'm going to do. what a procrastinating host i am!

thanks for starting 'list it'!

Those are some wonderful city sayings!! Love them!!! I have a thing for alliteration statements, but could be very persuaded to get on the slogan bandwagan.....Love the statement about Walla Walla, that they liked it so much they named it twice, and Berkeley!

I am actually on time this week...(don't faint)....
Here's my take and thanks for doing this Aimee :D

Love your list! I always wonder about those superlative city claims, especially when they are completely random.

My list is at www.blog.wrightarts.com

What a fun list, Aimee. I looked for my town, but no nickname was listed. Not really a surprise, we are just happy when the name gets pronounced correctly. It's Leominster, pronounced "Lemon-stir". Unless you are a true native, in which case it becomes "Lemon-Stah". Never waste an "r" that you could stick on the end of a word ending in a vowel, you know.

Here is my list.

I love this "list it Tuesday!". Made my first list today... Super fun!

I love those catch lines too. I grew up in Baltimore, MD. The Baltimore drawl sounds like..BAWLMER. On one of the city line highways there is a sign that says 'Welcome To Baltimore.' For as long as I've been around some enterprising souls spraypaint out the correct spelling and write ' Welcome to BAWLMER" then beneath it HON. Which is another of the towns colloquialisms.

My list is up!

i'm really partial to the roswell, NM one. that one got my funny bone. and the most bizarre has to go to long beach. i've heard lots of landlocked cities reaching for a comparison with an exotic beach locale to spiff up the civic image, but for a city that needs no qualifier to identify itself with a state in middle america, well, that just turns the whole thing upside down on its head.

I've made my list! I like yours Amiee! I looked up some of the ones in my state. Of course I knew Big D and some of the others around me, but some were new to me. Lots of fun.

Now you have me singing:

City in a coma, I know I know, it's serious...

Does Artsyville have a slogan, oh marketing one?

Angenita said...

The city in a coma.... I'm speechless, not really a slogan I could come up with.

Oh, the nicknames I could add...

Spokane, WA: Spoke-aloo, Spoke-Vegas

Seattle: Emerald City, Fog City

Edmonds, WA: Deadmonds

There's Enumclaw, WA -- Enumscratch to the locals -- and there's also a town called Wenatchee which has an unprintable nickname. But there are so many towns with eye-popping names here that nicknames are almost beside the point.

hehe!! this list made me giggle!!

We enjoy doing this as well while we roadtrip, though ours tend to usually be rather unflattering. (I'm talking to you Arkansas, the armpit of America).

I'm a day late and Lord knows more than a dollar short - but here's my contribution for the week!

And inside the county of Orange Curtain there is a city, Garden Grove, which everyone in Orange County calls "Garbage Grove." Oy!
