to do today and stuff i did

to-do-list

stuff-i-did-list

where would i be without my trusty checklist? increasingly, nowhere. if it's not written, it's not done. electronic reminders are next to worthless. it's too easy to click ignore or to push off the deed to another day. i need something concrete and in my face that says "do this now", plus i thrive on the satisfaction of crossing out or checking off a task on a real piece of paper. so i doodled a set of my own. but i found that they fell short, because traditional to do lists only cover a sliver of what the day demands. you can wake up knowing what you MUST do, but you really have no idea what you'll HAVE to do. you can cross off "pay bills", "finish project" and "return books" with ease because there are spaces for those neatly planned activities, but what about the fifteen minutes you spent looking for a lost shoe on the way to the library? the half hour you invested in cleaning the nutri-grain bar off the carseat and the applesauce that got launched on the ceiling during breakfast? the morning you spent covering your co-worker's ass and the two hours you spent re-formatting a document for your flighty boss? where is the credit? where is the fairness? these are time-eaters and accomplishments too; shouldn't you get to cross these things off your list? yes, you should, and now you can with the "stuff i did" checklist. think of it as express journaling, a down and dirty summary of your day, a document that dishes up a little justice to the tasks you didn't expect.

i've put these files on flickr as free printables (for personal use only, please)! click here for to do and here for stuff i did. once you're signed into flickr, select "all sizes", then "download large size", then print away to your art's content on 8.5"x11" paper - i used astrobrights for a kick of color. each sheet yields three lists - just trim them apart with a paper cutter. happy list making, and don't forget to check the boxes when you're finished with your day. get the recognition you deserve!

How sweet are you to give us such a fun way to show ourselves a sense of accomplishment everyday!!!!

I think it's funny that they are two separate lists because that's exactly what happens unless one was being pushed by an authoritarian project leader. Hahaha!

These are so great. I always make a list, then end up doing other things and then write those things on my list just so I have something to cross off. :)

thank you so so much!
I love these. I related to so much of what you wrote in your post and I love that satisfaction of ticking off on lists :)
I like how you made it black and white so we can print on whatever paper we want!
I don't have a flickr account but I was able to download them anyway.
have a great day!

Ah, the magic of old fashion check lists... Yes, yes, I never part with them. In fact, I think I have a a few stuck to my pin board in huge letters, since I'm so forgetful!

Thanks for sharing! I totally love the "Stuff I did" list...because I do that all the time!" I find it so much more satisfying to write down all that I do in a day...because then we realize how much we've accomplished :)

hooray.
gracias, miss organizadora,

me, being the lazy procrastinating ninja bugger that I am, I'll probably end the day writing: "downloaded, printed and filled-in to do list".
well, it's a start, innit? ;)

I just started a 'stuff i did' list and love how it makes me feel at the end of the day. Talk about synchronicity because now I can do it in Technicolor. Thanks a million.

TO DO:
look at aimee's blog.
tell her she's amazing.
tell her in doodles
& in reds
& greens
& yellows.
tell her in retrospect
& in the moment.
say thank you.
send a hug.xo

Very cute Aimee. I'm a bit concerned about the things I did list. I think I might just get a little ticked off at all of the time wasted on other peoples' shtuff. And I might just notice how much time I spend looking at magazines.

Awesome! And so true, because ALL OF THOSE THINGS are total time suckers...and it is NOT FAIR that they don't get counted and we don't usually get credit!!!

I am a total list-aholic and could barely function without my lists even it if makes me grumpy to wake up and see how long my list is.
And, I LOVE the idea of the "stuff I did" list, which I occasionally do already to show my husband how multi-tasking Mama keeps this three ring circus afloat!

aimee, those are fab!!! i'll def be printing a few, they'll come really handy with my ever disorganized listing ways. thank you!

Stuff I did - I love that list!

it is so positive. "To do today" can become more of a bad conscience. But even if it doesn't ... I make them almost every day! I used to collect them; thinking they would make a fun book. And now I've seen someone else made that book (but it was my idea first ... how did that thief get into my folders?)

What a brilliant idea...and how generous of you!! So with you on the miscellaneous things that get shoved under the rug and forgotten. Now I can add, "Cleaned up around the toilet after my 5 year old missed again" on my "Dones" and feel better about my day! :)

I'm not a list person, and this is definitely going to put a big smile on my (attempt to) list making! Wonderful combination of wit, color and wisdom as usual.

Katrina said...

i love these lists! it's true that somethings need to be done today and other things can wait until tomorrow. i heard someone say that 25% of the things on our to-do lists don't really need to be done! that kinda scares me, what else doesn't need to be done?!?

Phoenix Peacock said...

ooo I love these! And I make lists about stuff I've accomplished on the days I don't feel I've been very productive... because when you add up all that stuff it really does make one proud!
And thanks for sharing! I love it!

You are so genius! I think I definitely need to start keeping track of the crap that sidetracks me and prevents me from getting to my real to-do list. I think you may have just fixed a major self esteem issue for a lotta women out there!

Oh thanks! Very generous of you. I love a list... Just wish I could print from this iPhone now! Sigh.

These are brilliant - and thank you for sharing! I think I spent most of yesterday on "Stuff I Did" so hardly anything came off my to-do list. At least I will feel some sense of accomplishment now - it's not like I sat around all day but if I did, I could write it down and check it off!

I just wanted to pop back and say that I printed these out on white and have had so much fun colouring and doodling on them.
My favourite so far is the Stuff I Did. No matter what I planned to do in a day, I always end up doing SOMEthing so this checklist gives me a lovely sense of accomplishment even if I didn't do the 'supposed to' things :-)
thank you!
