secret garden

secret-garden-picture

can you believe it? it's a feelgood painting from me, and an authentic one to boot. my daughter and i read the secret garden last week and i found myself just as enchanted by it as she was. so while i should have been packing for our trip into the texas sunshine, i jumped into this doodle at the 11th hour, powered by the thought that the yearning for a little secret garden doesn't go away even when childhood ends. for some of us it means getting lost in art, for others it is a retreat into reading, writing, cooking, running, conversation with best friends, tending an actual garden - really anything that takes us into our own happy dream world.

the fabric and little crochet thingies i picked up on a quickie IKEA spree on sunday - and since i don't sew, it's anyone's guess as to what will come of it all. pins, tape, glue, wood - i'm about to find out what i can do with fabric other than putting a needle through it. but first i will unpack and catch up on all of your worlds. thanks for your wonderful and supportive comments in the last post, even those from the spammers which i read with a chuckle and then deleted. wishing you a maximal fun and minimal stress week! if you find yourself stretched to your limit, find your secret garden and hide there for a bit :)

How beautiful! I love the Secret Garden. There is a wonderful historical home just kittycorner from my house. I love the garden there and told the owner it reminded me of the Secret Garden.

Low and behold, she'd modeled the garden after that book--even down to the hedges round about. Lovely lovely place. I'm so blessed!

As are you! Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing your whimsical talents with the rest of us!

The Montgolfiere brothers were the inventors of the hot air balloon, first flight in 1783, Paris.

I say you call him Monty.

Did someone say hooch? I'm there!

We are getting hit with the snow, so I enjoy the sun for me!

We love going to the Chicago Botanic Gardens and I love all the little benches nestled amongst the willows by the pond.

I would love a magic secret garden I could get to from my closet with a big papasan chair, a window full of sunlight, and a stack of books waiting for me.

not to be overlooked-this doodle is outstanding!

this is one of the best turns of conversations i've ever had in a post! what started as a light and fluffy feelgood discussion has now slid into a history of hot air balloons and kerfuffletalk about sneaking off into a garden with a bottle of hooch. and now my painting has been renamed monty.

you are the best readers. ever!

kerfuffletalk
hootch

and who knew about the inventors of the hot air balloon?... i just know i will dazzle someone this holiday with my flair for dinner conversation, hitting them at just the right moment with this bit of trivia (that is, if i can figure out how to pronounce Montgolfiere)

I LOVED The Secret Garden when I was little -- the book and the movie. Glad to hear it's still delighting today's young girls.

So THAT's what hooch is? Good grief, I've always thought it was something else. Probably because of Charo and her hoochie-coochies. How embarrassing!

Aimee, dear, YOU are my secret garden. I can always come here for some sunshine and color. Thanks for tending it.

Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season!

It's so great to see this whole list of people who loved The Secret Garden as a child. It was one of my all-time favorites! WHen I read it to my boys when they were little, they even liked it (though they didn't much care for The Little Princess, which I also loved). My neighborhood is filled with "secret gardens", and they all make me ridiculously happy.

Fun doodle!

FYI to Artsyvillagers: I did name the character "Monty" thanks to Peggy!
