here's my latest secret agent project - for the last few weeks i've been absorbed in making a ketubah, a jewish wedding contract. it is a tradition that goes back thousands of years, a very early form of a pre-nuptial agreement. in those days the documents were very transactional in nature, but over time the ketubah has evolved as an art form, much like illuminated manuscripts, and modern text reflects marriage vows between the couple. just a few more touches and this one will be finished. once the happy couple has seen the final piece i will share more pictures and the process i used to get to the finish line. making things for other people is not my strong suit, but bouts of frequent panic helped a lot. ultimately, the honor and satisfaction of creating a document to unite two people is what has seen me through. love indeed conquers all.
see jane for more ♥ around the world, and i'll be back soon with a report from my floors!

How wonderful (if nerve wracking!). Can't wait to see more!
it is wonderful in every possible way. But I think I saw a bet where there was supposed to be a chaf... ;)
a doodle-ketubah, fab!
however, to be perfectly honest with you, I had never heard of its existence until you mentioned it (I don't know much about weddings, of any kind.)
I can imagine it must have been nerve-racking to create such an important piece for s/one else. are they hanging it on the wall FOR EVERYONE TO SEE? (no pressure, like! ;)
you're obviously a doodle-lady of many doodle-talents that can put her doodle-goodness to many doodle-good doodle-uses. doodle-hoorah!
So far- I lika aw lot!!!!!
what an honor to be chosen to make a ketuba! and how lucky they are to have you make it!
since i live in israel, i know these well. many people choose to just treat it as a formality and are not doing much about it, but some are pieces of art. i once did some work for sothersby's here in israel when they were auctioning judaica, and some of the ancient old antique ketubas are just unbelievable!
there still has to be an amount to compensate the family in case of a divorse, though (at least in the orthodox weddings, which is what most people do here, as the rabbinut is dealing with marriage license). usually it's just a symbolic amount of 1 agorot (less than a cent), but it's there.
beautiful
This is beautiful! I sure wish I had your penmanship.
Can't wait to see more!
xoxo
What a precious artistic document! They will be so happy with this...I would!
wow, sounds like such an exciting project - and what an honor :) very nice work aimee!
gorgeous! i could stare at the script all damn day.
i have a friend who used to calligraph beautiful ketubahs.....they truly are works of art in the highest degree! congratulations on finishing this.....this peek already tells me that the bride and groom will treasure it for the masterpiece that it truly is! bravo, aimee!! :))
oh that's pretty cool! Can't wait to see more :)
(here's my c.v.)
how cool! and what a nice commission to work on!!
how incredible and special, aimee! i want to get married again and have a document of love.
Aimee..I love it...beautifully done...enchanting...the Hebrew lettering is looking very good (and correct)! Many ktubot I've seen were 'taking themselves a bit too seriously', with like heavy, super rich textures, and ancient biblical fonts, where here you have that Aimee'ish quality to it, sensitivity and whim, AND most importantly it is contemporary and LIGHT. Your work still offers a lot of respect for the purpose of it. I loved your writing about it, telling about the ktubah's origins and its beautiful significance...Very very nicely done...Be proud of your ktubah.
this is wonderful. is there anything you can´t do?... hugs! p.s. where were you when i was getting married?... :)
aimee!!!
what an amazing project... i absolutely can't wait to hear more, and am just blown away by the sample photo you have provided... this is just stunning... there is obviously nothing the doodle-girl can't doodle :)
Wow Aimee!!! It's beautiful. Your letters have written so many stories and now one couples very special story. So cool really! So cool! your creativity and your precision are wow. You should be a font designer call it artsyville. Yeah you could do it!!!(:
Thanks for the sneak peek! I can't wait to see the finished piece.
what a responsibility, but what a wonderful unique document
thank you all :)
the text in this one was, for once, not my own words - they provided the text they wanted me to work with, and so that is what i lettered. hope to share more photos soon!
Having cruised your blog, I think I have fallen in love with your lettering - I want to do it too and label everything in my life!!
OMG that is a true delight Aimee. What a gift (your art is to the world I mean :)
Look at what you have created! Aimee what a gift of beauty, a lasting life-long gift with your gorgeous works - I'm in awe. I'm was fascinated by what you said about making things for others I'm the same way but in the end ...as this proves you created magic. Can't wait to see more :)
Beautiful. Makes me want to get married again.
it is so beautiful, and what a treasure. is it silly that i wish i was jewish right now? my family has no traditions of the sort, sigh.
i can't wait to see the whole piece.
