here's my latest secret agent project - for the last few weeks i've been absorbed in making a ketubah, a jewish wedding contract. it is a tradition that goes back thousands of years, a very early form of a pre-nuptial agreement. in those days the documents were very transactional in nature, but over time the ketubah has evolved as an art form, much like illuminated manuscripts, and modern text reflects marriage vows between the couple. just a few more touches and this one will be finished. once the happy couple has seen the final piece i will share more pictures and the process i used to get to the finish line. making things for other people is not my strong suit, but bouts of frequent panic helped a lot. ultimately, the honor and satisfaction of creating a document to unite two people is what has seen me through. love indeed conquers all.

however, to be perfectly honest with you, I had never heard of its existence until you mentioned it (I don't know much about weddings, of any kind.)
I can imagine it must have been nerve-racking to create such an important piece for s/one else. are they hanging it on the wall FOR EVERYONE TO SEE? (no pressure, like! ;)
you're obviously a doodle-lady of many doodle-talents that can put her doodle-goodness to many doodle-good doodle-uses. doodle-hoorah!

since i live in israel, i know these well. many people choose to just treat it as a formality and are not doing much about it, but some are pieces of art. i once did some work for sothersby's here in israel when they were auctioning judaica, and some of the ancient old antique ketubas are just unbelievable!
there still has to be an amount to compensate the family in case of a divorse, though (at least in the orthodox weddings, which is what most people do here, as the rabbinut is dealing with marriage license). usually it's just a symbolic amount of 1 agorot (less than a cent), but it's there.

Aimee..I love it...beautifully done...enchanting...the Hebrew lettering is looking very good (and correct)! Many ktubot I've seen were 'taking themselves a bit too seriously', with like heavy, super rich textures, and ancient biblical fonts, where here you have that Aimee'ish quality to it, sensitivity and whim, AND most importantly it is contemporary and LIGHT. Your work still offers a lot of respect for the purpose of it. I loved your writing about it, telling about the ktubah's origins and its beautiful significance...Very very nicely done...Be proud of your ktubah.
