bella's loss

my corner view won't be posted this week due to a tragic turn of events. instead, today i'm writing about my dear friend bella sinclair, a brilliant artist and mother of two beautiful girls, who suddenly lost her husband last weekend. they were due to move back to the states from japan in just a few days.

this is where the e-world fails me. while it brings us together from all over the globe, it also splits us apart. we develop friendships in our online worlds with people who share the same values and interests, some to the point that we forget that we've never met them in person. when something tragic like this happens, we have the urge to jump in the car and go hug them, bring them meals, and cry with them. and in most cases we can't. instead we're stuck with the limitations of the keyboard, having to convey our sympathies in static messages that don't come close to touching the continuity and depth of feeling that we want to express.

bella is a rare soul who has touched thousands of people through her beautiful illustrations as well as her wise, funny, thoughtful and uplifting comments on every blog she visits. i hope in some small way that we can now provide that emotional support back to her. please keep bella's family in your thoughts as they cope with their loss and grief. and give your loved ones an extra long hug. life just doesn't last long enough.

i'm so sorry for bella and her girls. it's a shocking loss. the web is an unusual comfort during times of loss. in some ways, we felt more support from our online friends than those in our 'real' lives. bella has a good friend in you.

It's a really strange feeling. I don’t "know" Bella. I only know her blog and beautiful drawings and just reading this, my eyes are full of tears. I'm so deeply sorry for her lost :(

thank you for writing this tender and thoughtful post, aimee... it's so true what you say... that in the most important ways the friendships we form through blogging are no different from the ones we share in everyday life... we care just as much... and yet, when something so unexpected happens to one of these friends, we aren't physically with them to give a hug, a hand, and a heart in person... it makes you feel the helplessness, and the distance...

because of your post here though, i, along with others i'm sure, did click through to offer what words we could to bella, which seem so very inadequate... but i do think that behind the words are the hearts... and with all those hearts sending out that much love it really does make a difference...

Aimee, Oh, I'm so so sorry to hear this. I understand what you're saying. I've been "good" fb friends with a friend of a friend who'd I'd never met before - until last week. And I met her along with her husband, who is most likely in his final months of life as his cancer has spread all over. It made it all the more real to be with them, of course, and I felt mildly good to be able to bring them some brownies... But But ... what really matters are words and thoiughts and those can be sent from anywhere. WHen my dad died a few years ago, some of my faraway friends were just as useful as those people who were right here.

It is amazing how close we can feel to people we've only written to, never met or spoken with. My thoughts and love are with Bella this evening.

Aimee... i couldn't agree more with you about the limitations I feel sometimes too!! Especially in times like this where you really wish you could be there. I hope and pray Bella draws strength from all the kind words left on her blog and feels the love that is there... but somehow stuck in cyberspace.

I'm really sorry about this Aimee. I think about this quite a bit and how it would be "handled". This is true, as great as Blogging is, it just can't ever express what even a simple hug can do.

I couldn't agree more, it's exactly how I felt when I heard the shocking news. Although I'm sure that just knowing you are there is a comfort to Bella.

I didn't "know" Bella, but I am so sorry to hear of anyone having to grieve so. We will be at a funeral tonight, in fact, of a cousin's husband who passed away unexpectedly. They have 2 teenagers. I'm so glad we are close enough to be there. I'll pray for Bella and her daughters....

What a sudden loss, for Bella and her family. And I'm sorry for you too. I am sure Bella can feel your sincerity despite the 'static' nature of the computer. You are such a dear friend Aimee.
